Following is a collection of satirical caricatures of 19th century robber barons and powerful millionaires associated with North American railroading in this project. A few were not particularly rich, but nonetheless associated with primary movers and shakers. This display is a work in progress and is added to when new references are found. Most in this list came from Puck Magazine, famous for its biting satire prior to the death of founder and principal cartoonist, Joseph Keppler. Judge Magazine was a competitor and also known for its satirical cartoons, but no good collection of images from Judge has been found.
Notes on names attributed to caricatured personalities:
Be warned that published references are not always correct in indentifications of personalities caricatured by Puck.
So far, all identifications of Jay Gould's caricatures have proven 100% correct! That is because Gould was easily the most reviled man on Wall Street in his time.
Conversely, readers will find numerous mistaken references to Cornelius ('Commodore') Vanderbilt in Puck caricatures. Never mind that he died in 1877, before Puck began publication. Even some scholorly works have proven mistaken. All caricatures seen so far that were identified as Cornelius 'Commodore' Vanderbilt actually depicted his son, William Henry Vanderbilt.
Puck cartoonists commonly drew Jay Gould, William Henry Vanderbilt, and Cyrus Field as a triumvirate of monopolistic evil. Some web references misidentify Field as Russell Sage or Daniel Drew. Readers can easily identify Field by his long nose and mid-length beard that was shorter under his chin than at the edges. The smooth-faced Chauncey Depew appears in many Puck caricatures, normally situated among prominent New York politicians. While closely associated with the Vanderbilts in railroad stocks and bonds, Depew was never portrayed as a scoundrel. Consequently, most references overlooked him.
